So 1st impressions in brief:
Well apart from the machine looking like a George Forman grill when it's horizontal. It's damn sexy vertical.
The systems O/S looks like a PSP with the XMB interface which makes it easy to use and set up very similar to a PSP.
The picture is something rather special through an RGB connection and the sound via Opticial out is amazing. Especially in games as they're in Dolby Digital.
Using the Memory Stick Duo to import pictures and music is really easy, and the DVD playback is better than my 7 year old Sony DVD player. The visualisation for music are nice and the picture slide show is rather smart.
The games look lovely and the new Six-axis pads are rather good, the movement sensing seems to work well but only used it on F1. Very strange doing something that I used to tell my sisters wouldn't help when playing games years ago (ie moving the pad to steer.)
The pad also has new lower shoulder buttons which now feel and work like triggers (lots of play on them) and are extremely sensitive. Not to mention the fact that the pads don't have any wires which is rather a smart thing but confusing when you always had to move the cables to pass a pad to a friend so you instintively try to move it even though there is anything attached to the pad. The charge seems to last a long time on them. We've been using them since friday afternoon and they are only just needing to be charged.
Now to the bad points and there are a few:
The machine doesn't play PS1/2 games straight out of the box you need to update the firmware as the Euro machines don't have the PS2 chips in them. So require software emulation of the previous PS' hardware. I've managed to sort this out by downloading the Firmware V1.60 and sticking it on a memory Stick then installing it to the PS3. Now all my Singstar and EyeToy games work which is ace. So far I've found 2 games that don't work at all and they are SSX: Tricky and Buffy: Chaos Bleeds.
Also you can't get online without broadband and a router either wired or wireless.
Also the Remote Play between my girlfriends & my PSP doesn't work, as it needs to go online to enable ATRAC playback so it will work. So no Remote controlling of the PS3's XMB yet.
So I need to get broadband which it's just a matter of waiting for Karoo to get there arses in gear and sort it out.
Keep a close eye on our production site as we've been working on a few PS3 & PSP related films. I'll post them on here when they're done but the extra stuff will only be available via www.20six.co.uk/filmsyourequire
