PSP bargain of 2007

Coldplay Live 2003 UMD £0.99

No I've not missed a digit off the above amount I managed to pick up the full concert on UMD for under a pound.

The image quality is lovely and features multi-angles and really high quality concert sound. Works well to just listen to.

For less the a quid you can't beat it and it now means I have all the different types of UMDs for my PSP wooooo!

First plays

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare £44.99 Game

At one popint my PSN buddy list had everyone playing this game and everyone I talked to said buy it. So I finally relented and bought it. I sopent a good 8 hours going through the story mode which sets you in the role of an SAS operative and a US Marine. What a story! I've not plaid anything quite so tense and real feeling for a long time. I refused to try the online out until I'd done the story bu the online is the main selling point. It works so well, with the exception of the party options being no where near as good as for R:FoM.

The first must have PS3 game in my opinion.

Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction -  4 hour playtest

I really like the demo but the full game is so much more. I only played a small amount of it but what I did was truel;y wonderful. Like playing a Pixar cartoon. Great comedy and a nicely progressing story. An amazing amount of weaponas and upgrades.

I only paid for a short time but that I played I enjoyed way more than any platform game I've ever played.

Assassins Creed -  3 hour playtest

Not the game I was expecting, as the story revolves around someone having to access there genetic memories as an Assassin. A bit strange but good for it. My biggest griop is that it's very repetative but amazingly beautiful if you can for give the screen tearing issues when the camera is panned too quickly. I've been told this is going to be patched. I'll give a full review whenI get chance to have a proper go.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurection: Online £4.99 (online add on) PSN

Wow finally the game I've been waiting for for far too long and with the exception of a bit of lag due to chat it's the same game. Nothing beats throwing your friends around online and hearing them swear like dockers.

Firware 2.01

PS3 firware update that had to be patched a week later. Sadly this was not the all singing and dancing version with In-game XMB or Customer soundtracks and I personally don't care about that.

It did add a few new and interesting ferature the most noticable being the addition of a couple of icons on the XMB one for PSN and Information board. Basically an RSS channel feed but only from Sony's PS3 site. I'm sure this will change though.

The Chat display changed making it look nicer but hardfer to navigate and changed the background to the White room from Sony's ads.

Another addition was a Net-nanny type software for the PS3 browser. Which seems a real shame as the damn browser is broken anyway.

The next main feature was the ability to include custom themes. Sony's US Store had 3 new themes to be downloaded, but Sony also provided people with the option to create their own themes via a PC this has lead to some amazing themes. Checkout PS3-themes.com there are some amazing ones.

There are three major stand out features added in this Firmware;

1, The the ability to create custom playlist for your music and photos stored on the HDD. This woirks really well.

2, The ability to sort files (games and video) by albums this works for games and tidies up the XMB (PSP game in PSP foler, Demos in Demo folder etc)

3, The best bit the ability to Remote start and stop the PS3 via a PS3 even via a Wi-Fi hotspot. Sadly this feature didn't work properly but seems to have been fixed with the 2.01 patch. I've not managed to get it to work from anywhere other than via my own Wi-fi set up at home but I'll keep trying.

More first plays

Full games:

PS3

Spiderman 3: Borrowed from a friend and I was put off when I first started by it not controlling as well as the Spiderman2 (PS2) but once you get the hang of it it's rather nice. Feels unfinished and can be a bit buggy nut isn't a bad game, and thankfull no longer do I have to put up with "MY BALOOOOOON" being screech from a small child who should never be allowed to hold a ballon.

Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction: £39.98 [New] Tescos

I know I mentioned this in the last entry but it's amazing, it's just keeps on giving. Mainly weapons but that's what these games are about./ The story is progressing well and the controls are beautifully simple. The way that the game changes from 3rd-person Shooter, platformer, puzzler, Six-axis flying and falling, is seemless and stops the game from feeling repetative. Buy it fun for all the family.

Feel Ski £3.99 PSN Store

A six-axis game, hmm very hit and miss. Sadly the idea is sound you tilt the pad to control a skier down a hill. Sadly it's not as responsive as you'd like and it's quite dull. You only get 2 levels (basically too easy & too hard). The game has little depth. Sadly I couldn't seem to get a match online but I wasn't really that bothered.

SingStar (Solus) £17.99 Play.com

Firstly it took them 5 days to deliver something I expected to get on release day, not happy. Made stightly better by the fact I chosen the game without the mics as I saw no need in wireless mics. Which from what I've noticed don't even come with the game yet anyway. So I spent the money saved on downloading tunes from the SingStore. At £0.99 it's a total bargain, except if you already have them on previous PS2 Singstars. Looks like Sony are now going to make us early adopters pay twice, yet again. That said it does mean I can download the tunes I want not have to try and sing songs that I can't possible hope to win on.

The game it's self hasn't really changed but bit have been added to the experience ie SingStore (mentioned above) and My SingStar online. This is a stripped down version of sites like youtube. It allows you to share your songs, videos and picture with other people online. They can then rate your videos. I think over xmas this feature is going to be totally rinsed. It's very simple to use and works well just a shame the load is so poor (slow servers!?).

Social gaming at it's best and a great form of excersise as it improves lung caposity), shame it can create an annoyance to neighbours. I'm worried that Chelsea Dagger is going to get me evicted ;-)

PSP:

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow £17.99 Play.com

Yet again another order from play that took over 7 days to arrive. Sadly I've not played much of it yet but from what I have it's better than the Dark Mirror was. The game has the best controls I've used for a game of this type put Metal Gear to same. The story is awesome. Sadly when I first booted it up and had ago at the practice missions I was disappointed as the 1st 3 were the same as the previous game. Then you get 2 more that are new. Part 4 is combat training teaching you new stealing mores and the blind firing from cover. The 5th part teaches you how to swim. I'm not going to spoil this as it's was a really pleasnt surprise and shows how much better games can look running at 266Mhz. Can't wait to try God of War: Canins of Olimpus which runs at 333Mhz. But I digress.

The game is a typical 3rd person stealth action but what makes it differnt is the control method makes it a joy to play not damn hard work which means you can concentrate on playing rather than which buttons you should be pressing. I'll let you know what I think when I've completed it and had a good look at the Combat Ops demo that comes with the game.

Firware updates

PS3 ver 2.10

Wow if you've read the comment in the post below you'll see a list of some of the features. What I didn't know was that the update has an amzing effect on a PSP as you can now use Remote-play on PSP to play PS1 games from the PS3. This doesn't just mean the games bought from the PS Store but also any PS1 discs. I tested it using the PS1 games on the HDD. Then booted up Music 2000. I was playing the tunes I'd created on the software stored on my PS1 memory card that I'd transfered to the PS3. Not sure whether it was working properly but just having the ability to use it is an amazing feature.

Also the backwards compatatbility has been updated which means that finally SSX: Tricky and On Tour now work. Sadly Tricky doesn't work in DTS, boo. Also Buffy still has same graphic issues.

PSP ver 3.80

I've not noticed anything additional to what was mentioned in the below blog entry. If I discover anything interesting I'll let you know.
