Cheap classics...

I was doing my usual; looking around second hand electrical stores for cheap games when I came across the following PS1 classics: WipeOut 2097, Bust-a-move 2, Spyro The Dragon and Spyro2: Gateway to Glimmer. So how much did I pay for these total classics well... Only 2 have been released on the PSN Store so far and those are the Spyro games which I believe were taken down due to being buggy. Sony want to charge you about £3.49 per game. I bought them in reasonable condition for £1 each. So for roughly the cost of 1 download I've managed to get 4 top games. These games are playable in 2 ways as well either on you TV via the PS3 or on the PSP via PS3 Remote-play. I was addicited to WipeOut 2097 in my late teens, I managed to complete Spyro 2 many years ago with a friend and it took hours to collect the last gem we needed. Bust-a-move was always a finance drainer, when it was installed as an arcade cabinet in our college common room.

4 for £10

Gamestation offer on 2nd hand PS2 games. As you may be aware I always try and buy thing cheap if I can and there are tonnes of quality titles that I refused to pay full price for on release but occasionally I'll see them cheap. The last 4 I got were: XIII - A 1st person cell-shaded shooter that is like paying a mixture of Scanner Darly and a Bourne story. It works quite well eventhough I've only gone through the first couple of levels. Manhunt - The notrious Murder simulator that plays like the snuff film it's intened to be. It also uses the PS2 USB headset to an unerving level allowing for instruction to be broadcasted straight into your ears rather than through the speakers. It also allows you to use the mic to get attention of your next victim by making noise into it. This game freaked me out 5 years ago when I first played it but now seems a little tame when compared to the Hitman games. Primal - A starnge mix or Tomb Raider and Soul Reaver which allows you to control 2 characters to solve puzzles in...

Blu-ray movies

Sadly I'm not fully able to test the amazing potential of the BD-rom in my PS3 as I can't afford a 1080p HDTV but I have managed to get a few movies that are starting to have new features on them I purchased The Ratatouille boxset which comes with all of Pixars prevous short on an additiional disc. The film is awesome and even in standard def looks amazing. The menus system is unlike anything I've ever seen and allows for picture in picture (BD profile1.1) It also has a interactive game which due to SDTV I can't play cos I can't read the writing. Kung Fu Hustle - an awesome film and managed to test the multiple language feature by running the film as an English dub but with Dansk subtitles. Superman Returns - untested yet. Broakback Mountain (rental) - a sad film that looks and sounds amazing. My only major complaint other than not having a HDTV is that all the films output at 60Hz and sometimes looks a bit fuzzy due to the image being squeezed to fit my TV. Making somethings look worse than DVD quality. I

BBC TV on my PS3

Last night I noticed an article about a PS3 webrowser compatible version of the BBC's iPLayer on www.PS3fanboy.com

Firstly I found the site to look almost identical to the BBC's offical iPlayer. This version is unoffical and a bit buggy and glitchy. But it does play BBC programs on the PS3 which is a total bonus. Sadly it doesn't display in full screen but with a bit of youtube stlye resizing and moving it soon does. The image quality is nice but appears to have key framing issues and kerks along during fast motion. Making Tourch WOuld season 2 finale a bit difficult to watch.

But it is a start. Now all the Beeb have to do is allow ua access to the complete BBC archieve for an additional fee on top of the already extautionate license fee and I'll be happy.

Try it for yourselves: www.ps3iplayer.com

PSP Firmware Version 3.95

So amonther month and another PSP firmware update. This has to be the weakest one yet. All it appears to have done is relable a couple of options on the Remote-play screen but not changed any functionality. Meaning that you can now know that you're leaving the PS3 on to continue downloading or shut the PS3 off.

It has also added a custom button set up for the PSP so that useful button can be remapped. Ie Turning R3 into Triangle. Rather than using select as the hot key to switch certain button functions.

Store refresh

So as you may be aware I have access to the following store UK/EU, Austrailian, Hong Kong and USA. I've been looking at the new layout anmd all the regions deal with their contents differently which is an arse. The store looks and feels like the SingStore and seems simple. The only real issues are with font size being too small even on a 28" SD CRT. There's no search option which would be simple and effective. I'll review each store sepately in the comments.

[MGO] Beta late than never [ninja edit]

I've had wonderful news this morning and something that all PS3 gamers in the EU will be happy with.

Konami have announced that when the PS3 firmware update 2.30 is launched along with us getting a newly designed PSN Store and a few HD Audio option we will be able to download ther Metal Gear Online Premiere (MGO)  beta.

It looks like this is all happening from 17th April 2008 on wards but from what I have read the actual beta doesn't appear to open until the [23rd wrong] 21st April 2008. The news states that it's going to be running for 2 whole weeks. I need to confirm this as I'm trying to get the time off.

If successful and I know the exact date it starts then ater a week off work I'll be as hairy and smelly as Big Boss after a week in the Jungle. But hopefully not as Grey haired as Old Snake.

Roll on next thrusday and I'll let you know what my first impressions are of the new store and hoopefully MGO.

MGO Premiere beta available from UK store now but see comments.
